Same title does not mean same job for men and women

Same title does not mean same job for men and women

Women are often paid less than male colleagues, even when they share the same job title, because men take a greater share of high-profile tasks, claims new research that identifies a “Powerpoint premium” in offices.

Men give more presentations, undertake more negotiations and work more with spreadsheets, all of which are seen as highly visible roles, asserts the study by economist Aspasia Bizopoulou at the University of Edinburgh.

It was not clear whether men put themselves forward more for such tasks or if managers are more likely to allocate the roles to men.

Previous studies have shown gender pay gaps exist even in relation to the same job. However, this study, presented to the Royal Economic Society, shows that although staff share job titles they are not doing the same tasks.

“Accounting for the extent to which men and women do different activities under the same job title can explain up to 50pc of the gender wage gap,” she said.
